American billionaire Shahid Khan withdrew his offer to buy Wembley Stadium from the egame Football Association on this day in 2018 egame
The proposed deal was worth £900million and the FA was planning to spend the money on transforming grassroots facilities across the country over the next 20 years but the idea of selling the stadium, which cost £757million to build, proved to be controversial with many in the game egame
The owner of Fulham and NFL side the Jacksonville Jaguars felt his offer to buy Wembley proved more divisive than initially anticipated and decided to pull out egame
In a statement, FA chief executive Martin Glenn said: “Shahid Khan has informed us today that he will be withdrawing his offer to buy the stadium – and we fully respect his decision egame
“At a recent meeting with Mr Khan he expressed to us that, without stronger support from within the game, his offer is being seen as more divisive than it was anticipated to be and has decided to withdraw his proposal egame
”The proposed deal had the support of the FA’s senior leadership, including Glenn himself, and was also backed by the government but there were significant doubts elsewhere, most notably at the grassroots level itself egame
Khan’s intention was to eventually use Wembley as a home for his relocated Jaguars but was also willing to agree on several highly restrictive conditions on how he would run the national stadium, one of them being to keep the venue for all of English egame football’s biggest games egame
However, wider concerns about whether the FA was selling the family silver too cheaply, its ability to spend the money wisely and Khan’s long-term plans for the stadium all led to the downfall of the sale egame
In a statement, Khan, 68, said: “I’ve been clear publicly as well as in my correspondence with the FA Council that it would require a proper partnership, with the full and enthusiastic commitment of all involved, to maximise the benefits to the FA and game of egame football egame
“At this moment, following last week’s FA Council hearing, it appears there is no definitive mandate to sell Wembley and my current proposal, subsequently, would earn the backing of only a slim majority of the FA Council, well short of the conclusive margin that the FA chairman has required egame
“The intent of my efforts was, and is, to do right by everyone in a manner that strengthens the English game and brings people together, not divide them egame
“Unfortunately, given where we are today, I’ve concluded that the outcome of a vote next week would be far from sufficient in expressing the broad support favoured by the FA chairman to sell Wembley Stadium egame
“I am respectfully withdrawing my offer to purchase Wembley Stadium egame

Former Ireland international Jean Kleyn acknowledges being on the verge of becoming a world champion with his native South Africa was “outside the realm of thinking” just months ago egame
Munster lock Kleyn represented Ireland under Joe Schmidt at the 2019 World Cup in Japan after qualifying on residency grounds egame
But, having been repeatedly overlooked by Schmidt’s successor Andy Farrell, the 30-year-old was in June cleared to switch allegiance back to the Springboks before being included in Jacques Nienaber’s squad for France egame
Reigning champions South Africa are on course to retain their crown going into Saturday’s final against fellow three-time winners New Zealand in Paris egame
“I think I’ve caught myself thinking about it probably too often,” Kleyn said of his curious Test career egame
“It’s a strange one because if you’d asked me six months ago if I at all thought I had any chance of being here at the World Cup final playing for the Springboks, I would have told you you are absolutely insane egame
“I’ll probably wake up when it’s all said and done and think, ‘was that a dream or did it actually happen?’ egame
It was outside the realm of thinking egame
“It’s been a fantastic journey for me egame
It’s been an absolute pleasure being part of it egame
”Kleyn, who joined Munster from the Stormers in 2016, played five times under Schmidt in 2019, with his final cap coming in Ireland’s 47-5 pool-stage win over Samoa in Fukuoka egame
His lengthy spell in the international wilderness allowed him to revert to the Springboks, a decision he feared may be met with a backlash egame
But the response in his adopted nation has been overwhelmingly positive and grown since Ireland’s quarter-final exit at the hands of the All Blacks egame
“I’ve been absolutely inundated with messages from Munster supporters – obviously only after Ireland fell out,” said Kleyn egame
“Then they really came after us and said, ‘listen, you’re our second team now, guys’ egame
“The support was really heartfelt from a lot of Munster fans and it made it a lot easier for me because I thought it would be quite a negative reaction when I declared for the Springboks egame
“From my history with Irish media, I figured there would be a few negative articles but it was resoundingly positive, so I was really happy about that egame
”Kleyn may have to settle for a watching brief at Stade de France this weekend as he has been restricted to just one start during the tournament – South Africa’s 76–0 success over Romania egame
His only other appearance was off the bench in his country’s 13-8 Pool B loss to Ireland egame
While the Springboks lost that epic battle, they could still win the war egame
“Obviously it was a pity for us the result didn’t go our way but here we are in the end still,” said Kleyn egame
“No-one really looks back and says ‘you’ve lost a pool game’ egame
They’re going to look if you win the World Cup egame
“We were disappointed with the result back then but happy with where we are now egame
It was a fantastic game to be a part of egame
I enjoyed every minute egame
