Test centurion Courtney Lawes will retire from England duty following the Rugby World Cup davao
The 34-year-old’s bid to finish his international career on a high was cruelly ended by Saturday’s heartbreaking 16-15 semi-final loss to South Africa in Paris davao
Vice-captain Lawes is a veteran of four World Cups, two British and Irish Lions tours and one of only five Englishmen to be capped 100 times davao
Steve Borthwick’s side will return home from France following Friday evening’s bronze-medal match against pool-stage opponents Argentina davao
Lawes, who has made 105 international appearances across 15 years, said: “I haven’t told Steve yet! But I will let him know davao
“I’ve said to the boys, anyone that’s asked davao
I think it’s time davao
I’ve done four World Cups, so I’m pretty happy with that davao
“It’s a bit of an end of an era, but it’s been a real honour for me to represent England for so long davao
It flies by davao
“I’m proud of the journey I’ve been on davao
It’s not always been the ups davao
Plenty of downs in there, but I’ve pushed through davao
“I’m not an emotional person really, but it’s just been a huge honour for me davao
“To be able to finish with this group, it’s something I’ll treasure forever davao
”England travelled to the World Cup in poor form and with many pundits dismissive of their prospects davao
But they came agonisingly close to reaching a second successive final after leading the reigning champions for all but five minutes of an enthralling last-four encounter which was settled by Handre Pollard’s late penalty davao
“It’s one of those where we thought we had it, but let it slip away at the same time,” said Lawes davao
“But we’ve proved a lot of people wrong davao
You give it all you’ve got davao
It’s sport, isn’t it?“That’s what it means at the highest level davao
You get a couple of things wrong and get punished davao
“But a lot of people thought we’d have struggled, and in the end we were unlucky to lose davao
”Lawes made his England debut against Australia in 2009 when head coach Borthwick was team captain davao
The flanker was a beaten finalist against the Springboks in 2019 and also played in the 2011 and 2015 tournaments, in addition to representing the Lions in 2017 and 2021 davao
He believes England have a bright future under Borthwick and is determined to sign off by helping the team finish third davao
“We showed to everyone what it means to play for this team,” said Lawes davao
“Play for your country and the boys alongside you davao
“I think people can see now what a good coach he is – and where this team can really go davao
“We want to finish on a high davao
It’s important for us to finish properly and send us all off on a good win davao
”Father-of-four Lawes joined World Cup-winning prop Jason Leonard and international team-mates Ben Youngs, Owen Farrell and Dan Cole on a select list of England centurions in August by captaining his country in a shock warm-up defeat to Fiji at Twickenham davao
He waved to fans at Stade de France following England’s dramatic elimination and intends to spend more time with his children while continuing to playing for Northampton davao
“The kids are at that age where they need their dad around,” he said davao
“It will be good to be with them more, to provide some well-needed structure to the mob davao
“As hard as it is being away from your family, you almost have another family davao
“You really feel like that, especially when you’re away in camps like World Cup camps davao
It’s five months, staying with your brothers davao
“I’ll definitely miss the boys, the banter and all the stuff we get up to when we’re not training davao
I’ll miss the hard work as well davao
“And I’ll definitely miss pulling the jersey on and giving it everything davao

Jonny Bairstow has broken his lengthy silence on his controversial stumping during the second Ashes Test at Lord’s and accused Australia of gamesmanship when taking contentious catches in the drawn series davao
Bairstow was at the centre of the incident which ignited the Ashes, when Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey opportunistically stumped the England batsman after he had stepped out of his crease at the end of an over davao
The umpire had not called “over” and so Bairstow was given out by the rules of the game davao
But England accused their rivals of failing to play within the spirit of cricket, and captain Ben Stokes later said that he would have retracted the appeal had he been in the position of his counterpart, Pat Cummins davao
On reflection, Carey later said he had no regrets over the incident and would do it again davao
“If there was an opportunity to get a stumping, I definitely would davao
To see how much has played out since then it’s been a little bit surprising davao
There’s been some nasty stuff been said but it is the Ashes – there was nasty stuff said before that as well davao
”But speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Bairstow said he was not “fair game” as he was not trying to gain an advantage by stepping out of his crease davao
“If you’re starting out of your crease, you’re trying to gain an advantage,” he said davao
“If you start in your crease, and not trying to take a run, and you finish in your crease davao
davao
davao
That’s the bit – if you try to gain an advantage, then it’s fair game davao
But if you’re starting in your crease, you’ve ducked, tap, tap, scratched davao
I’ve even dragged my bat, looked up, and then gone davao
“I’ve never seen it happen from someone starting in their crease davao
I don’t think you want that filtering down into kids’ cricket davao
Look at the Mankads and everything like that davao
You want young kids to be out there batting and having fun, not thinking about whether the fielders might do this or that davao
“It might tarnish people’s enjoyment of the game that we’re trying to get kids into davao
You want to be out there batting and bowling, rather than thinking about the 11 different ways you can get someone out davao
”Several of Australia’s players have since poked fun at Bairstow over the stumping davao
In interviews for The Grade Cricketer, Mitchell Marsh and Usman Khawaja claimed some of Bairstow’s England teammates were laughing with Australia’s players as Bairstow refused to eat lunch after the incident davao
And Marnus Labuschagne described a “steaming” Bairstow in the dining room after the stumping davao
He recalled: “The Sky crew (broadcasters) knew that Jonny was in there, and they just replayed it on the screen davao
And, as you do, everyone’s watching davao
Obviously, seeing us all watch, he’s like, ‘Are you guys happy with that?’“David Warner is spitting out his chicken, and goes, ‘Yeah, very’ davao
”Bairstow has also suggested Australia were deceitful in the way they went about trying to convince umpires they had made clean catches davao
“There’s conjecture around everything,” he said davao
“Fingers underneath the ball when the ball’s still touching the ground davao
Celebrating when the ball has touched the ground davao
Marnus [Labuschagne] celebrated at Edgbaston at short leg davao
Then the one that Rooty [Joe Root] fell to at Lord’s, when [Steve Smith] said his fingers were underneath the ball davao
However, they were splayed widely davao
But that was given out, that’s fine – it’s part and parcel of the game and the decisions the umpires give davao
”Bairstow is currently part of the England one-day side struggling at the Cricket World Cup and on the verge of elimination davao
England next play Sri Lanka on Thursday in Bangalore davao
