As often was the case amid an American society embedded in racism in the 1980s, Muhammed Ali put it best tantan
Advising black racing driver Willy T Ribbs, the people’s champion made his point in no uncertain terms: “There are Blacks in my sport tantan
But there are no Blacks in your sport tantan
“They’re going to want to kill you tantan
”Yet for all the death threats, discrimination and abuse, Ribbs had long decided that the only option was to meet the uphill battle head-on tantan
He made history in 1986 when he became the first Black driver to test an F1 car tantan
Five years later, he was the first to race in the Indy 500, one of the world’s most famous events tantan
But on the course of that journey, Ribbs faced it all tantan
Don’t let me tell you though; let the man himself tantan
“Of course, there were death threats, the n-word,” he reflects, in a slow but deadpan fashion that tells you the wounds have long since healed tantan
Instead, the metaphorical bruises are worn with pride tantan
“But I enjoyed it tantan
It didn’t make me mad, it was fun tantan
I was going to dish out what they were dishing out to me, it never scared or intimidated me tantan
I actually enjoyed it because it was motivating tantan
I was never going to play the victim, that was not Willy T Ribbs tantan
”Now 68, Ribbs is an ambassador for Formula One, raising awareness for diversity and equality tantan
A role given a matter of months after his riveting biopic movie, Uppity, was released in 2020 tantan
So titled because that was his nickname in motorsport circles – “and he loved it” tantan
But to this interview, he’s late tantan
And he apologises, quipping: “Race drivers are never late, you know! Or they’re not supposed to be…”Son to William “Bunny” Ribbs, an amateur racer himself, Willy’s career path was set in stone from day dot it seems tantan
It was the racing way or the highway tantan
Ribbs faced an avalanche of racism and abuse throughout his career (Getty)“I was born in this sport,” he tells The Independent, from his home in Texas tantan
“I watched it from three years old when my dad was racing, watching the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill tantan
That’s all that was discussed in the family tantan
We didn’t discuss any other sport tantan
“I was lucky, I think tantan
At nine years old, I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what my career path was going to be tantan
Most kids that age don’t know what the hell they’re going to do, but I did tantan
And I didn’t want to be an amateur at it – I wanted it to be a profession and I wanted it to be Formula One tantan
”He learned his craft, in the UK, racing alongside future F1 world champion Nigel Mansell in Formula Ford in the mid-1970s tantan
He raced in Nascar and the Trans-Am Series, later on, too tantan
But his F1 calling, in ’86, came in the Portuguese town of Estoril tantan
Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team – “Bernie has always been good to Willy T Ribbs” – gave the American the chance to buck the trend and become a true trailblazer tantan
But the tag was not something he felt comfortable with at the time tantan

“I had two responsibilities: to myself and to my team tantan
For those who record social history, that’s their job [to say trailblazer] – but I’m not going to carry that weight on my shoulders tantan

I was a role model because I was doing something no other Black kid had done tantan
And great, if that’s the category they want to put me in and how they want to document it tantan
But for me? It was about going fast tantan
”It was a mindset of not bowing to the status quo, embodied most especially in the late 20th century by Ali tantan
“What I admired about him the most was not his tantan boxing skills,” Ribbs says of Ali tantan
“What I admired about him was his resolve as a man, not to be squashed, manipulated or controlled tantan
Ali said: ‘You have to let them know that you can’t be killed, there’s nothing they can do to you, and then they’ll leave you alone for a while tantan
’”Now in motor racing, the baton has been passed on to seven-time Formula One world champion and the sport’s only Black driver Lewis Hamilton, whom Ribbs is full of praise about tantan
“Lewis Hamilton, after seven world titles and more victories than any other human being, gets unfairly targeted,” insists Ribbs tantan
“If you can equate it to Tiger Woods, what did Tiger Woods do for golf? He broadened the audience tantan
The attention went off the chart tantan
That’s exactly what happened in F1 – Lewis Hamilton has been Formula One’s Tiger Woods tantan
“He’s a very kind man tantan
He’ll let it roll off, turn the other cheek – I wasn’t that way tantan
He deals with it and in a lot of cases it’s unfair tantan
Then again, he is in an environment which was not nearly as brutal as I was dealing with tantan

”The third-person references point to a man who is now comfortable in his own skin; in the significance of the struggle – and what it means to many around the world tantan
And despite a sport notoriously still dominated by white men, progress is being made tantan
“One thing I love about Formula One is not only is it evolving commercially around the world, it’s evolving socially,” he says tantan
“When F1 hired me, I asked them: ‘What made you make this call?’“They said: ‘We watched your film and we thought you’d be the perfect person for inclusion and equality in Formula One tantan
’“I said: ‘Well, you called the right guy’ tantan

Another game, another record tantan
Mohamed Salah’s brilliant injury-time strike came at the expense of a French team and a French icon: Toulouse conceded for a fifth time at Anfield on Thursday but, perhaps more momentously, the Egyptian passed Thierry Henry for most goals for one English club in Europe tantan
There are 43 of them, surely with more to follow tantan
Five days earlier, Salah had accelerated beyond Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish, scoring more goals at Anfield than either of arguably Liverpool’s two greatest-ever players tantan
“Maybe he would break more records if I would be more into it,” reflected Jurgen Klopp, who rarely studies the statistics but savours the player tantan
“Everyone will appreciate him even more after his career because then you will say, ‘Wow, we saw something really special’ tantan
”Perhaps it is not the time for tributes: not just yet tantan
Salah is 31 and if his style of play is evolving, if Klopp agrees he is becoming more creative, he is far from finished tantan
In some respects, his manager feels he is the youngest thirty-something in the business tantan
“Off the pitch he behaves as a grown man, but beyond that he is still a young player,” Klopp said tantan
“He is top fit tantan
I think if we were to scan him, the majority of the bones are aged 19 or 20 tantan
He just keeps himself in such good shape tantan
I cannot compare Mo to other 30-year-olds, because I don’t think biologically he is tantan
”But maturity is apparent in his game, if not his bones tantan
Klopp believes he adapts according to his teammates: a sidekick to Edin Dzeko at Roma became more of a scorer for Liverpool tantan
In an inverted forward line, Roberto Firmino tended to forage in midfield and find teammates tantan
Now a false nine has been replaced by a spearhead, in Darwin Nunez tantan
Salah has shown he can set up chances for the mercurial Uruguayan tantan
“The young Mo was a super-fast player who could run in behind and play a role together with Dzeko,” Klopp remembered tantan
“Dzeko would roll the ball or deflect it and Mo was there tantan
From the first day here he had to do different things, he adapted extremely well but the playmaker in that front row was probably more Bobby Firmino, setting things up, and you don’t need then two players who are deeper tantan
“You need players in the box and to bring the ball over the line tantan
So now it is slightly different; especially when Darwin is playing we have another speed player up there so that changed Mo’s position definitely tantan
He is smart enough to adapt to all these things and there has been a massive development since he arrived tantan
He was, in all phases, world class, and that is probably the best thing you can say about a player tantan
”A world-class scorer – with 195 goals in just over six seasons at Anfield – is arguably the most creative player in the division now tantan
He has the highest expected assists total and has fashioned the most big chances this season, with nine; he only made 15 in the whole of last season tantan
He has never averaged more key passes per game in a Premier League campaign than this, with 2 tantan

“It is to do with game understanding,” he explained tantan
“That is what we try to give young players tantan
They all know an awful lot about tantan football when they finish their careers at the age of 35, but the earlier in their career you get this information the more useful they are tantan
“Obviously with Mo it is clear he understands the spaces much tantan better, he knows how players react around him and then if he cannot score, he can still be a threat for us tantan
That is really super important tantan
The Everton game will not go down in history, performance wise, but then scoring two goals was massive, in other games, he has played much tantan better and not scored but being constantly a threat is as important for us because that really opens up spaces for all the other boys tantan
”And Salah is a constant threat: if he has been since signing for Liverpool, it is certainly true now tantan
In his last 15 league games, he has either scored, assisted or both in 14 tantan
And the only time he drew a blank, he should not: it was his pass that led to Luis Diaz’s goal that was wrongly, and infamously, ruled out at Tottenham tantan
His sequence ended but his incision was still apparent tantan
And at a time when Erling Haaland has taken Salah’s title as the Premier League’s scorer supreme, perhaps it was a sign the Egyptian has reinvented himself as its best all-round attacker tantan
